Six Flavors of Ayurveda
Six Flavors of Ayurveda
Only real natural flavours can add taste to your life. Natural food and medicines make you healthy and wealthy internally. As per ayurveda all natural food flavors must be part of diet to have a healthy body. These natural and organic flavors are obtained from the natural food products.

Ayurveda has Indian origin and its sanskrit name means "science of life" or "knowledge". It tells us the way to live in harmony with nature. What we eat directly affect our body and all the food and spices are medicinal substances that work according to our body type. That is why ayurveda lay emphasis on the mixing the food type according to body type and all the six flavors of ayurveda must be present in the food you consume.

Six Flavors of Ayurveda

According to ayurveda there are six natural flavors i.e. salt, sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and astringent. One must incorporate all the natural flavors of ayurveda in diet to have good health and balanced life.

Salt
Salt is the most common of all the natural food flavors that we consume. But you must not consume the salt in excess as it can lead to the high blood pressure. Salt otherwise helps in digestion. All sea food and sea vegetable have natural salt in them. It can lessen the pain in color and aids to digestion, absorption and elimination if taken in proper quantity.

Sour
As per ayurveda sour natural flavour is good for intellect but taken in excess can lead to resentment and envy. Sour natural flavors lead to anabolism but in moderation it is very refreshing as it nourishes the heart. Also if taken in excess then it may lead to ulcer, blood imbalances and acidity. Grapes, cheese, plums and citrus fruits are the example of sour food.

Bitter
There is nothing better than bitter natural flavor if you need something for detoxification. It balances the food cravings. But excess of bitter intake can cause headache, skin dryness, and weakness. Bitter gourd, spinach, lemon peel are the best source of bitter natural flavor and must be incorporated in daily food.

Sweet
Ayurveda recommends to do the intake of sweet food as it represents love and spiritual growth. One craves for the sweet food when need love, spiritual growth and in hectic life. If taken in moderate quantity then sweet organic flavors will cause the growth of plasma, fat muscles, reproductive fluid and bones. But intake in excess can lead to the laziness, dependability and greediness. Almost every food has sweet flavor in it but the percentage differ. The most common ones are wheat, meat, rice, date, maple syrup and honey.

Pungent
The flow of your body fluid and warmness will be increased with the intake of pungent food. Pungent food also increases the digestion and circulation. Excess of pungent food can causes anger, irritability and rough speech. Garlic, onions, radish and ginger are the sources of pungent natural flavor.

Astringent
Astringent organic flavor balances the blood sugar and must be consumed by the person suffering from blood sugar. But excess of this ayurveda natural flavor can cause the constipation and gas. Potatoes, broccoli, tea, lentils are few of the astringent flavor food.

Natural Flavours

As per ayurveda everyone has a unique body constitution and our body's physical, emotional and mental levels are controlled three doshas. These are vata, pita and kapha. If there is imbalance in any dosha and excess of ama or toxicity in our body one or other kind of dosha will occur leading to the disease.

Vata
is associated with the movement. All circulation, respiration, elimination, pulsation and motor neuro impulses are associated with Vata. When there is disbalance in vata energy disorders like asthma, spasms, rheumatoid etc can occur. To pacify vata take more sweet, sour and salty natural flavors. Do not take in hot, bitter and pungent organic flavors in excess.

Kapha
forms the body structure and helps in lubricating the joints and body organs. Obesity, high cholesterol, asthma, diabetes and other congestive disorders are associated with disbalance in kapha. Pungent, bitter and astringent are kapha pacifying ayurveda natural flavors. One should take less of sweet, salty and sour.

Pita
is the fire element and governs nutrition, metabolism, absorption and digestion. Hyperacidity, ulcer, skin eruptions, inflammatory disorders are part of pita dosha. Sweet, bitter and astringent are the pita pacifying food but you must take less pungent, salty and sour food.
