Yarrow
Scientific name: Achillea millefolium
Medicinal value
This herb stimulates and regulates the liver, acts as a blood purifier
and heals the glandular system. It is often used as a contraceptive, as
a part of diabetes treatment, for treating gum ailments, cold, flu,
fevers and toothache also. It arrests internal and external bleeding
during childbirth. Pregnant women should avoid this herb.
Religious importance
It is believed that Yarrow has the ability to keep a couple together
for 7 years and hence is used in love sachets as well as a gift to give
to newlyweds.
Habitat
Yarrow is a perennial and ranges from 8 inches to 3 feet tall and
prefers full sun and average to poor dry soils.
Yellow Dock
Scientific name: Rumex crispus
Medicinal value
This herb is a blood purifier, astringent and is used for treating all
diseases of blood and skin, anemia. It nourishes the spleen and liver,
detoxifies the liver, cleans and enriches the blood.
Yucca
Scientific name: Yucca spp.
Medicinal value
This herb is an effective treatment for joint pain caused by arthritis,
inflammation in the joints, dandruff and other scalp conditions.
Religious importance
It is believed that yucca protects home from evil influences. Prior to
rituals the soap and shampoo made by it are used to cleanse the body.
Habitat
Hot, dry and sunny locations are perfect for the growth of this
perennial plant.
