Lavendar
Scientific name: Lavandula officinalis
Medicinal value
This herb is an antidepressant and is used in combination with other
herbs for a remedy of depression, nervous tension, headache and stress.
Religious importance
It is believed that Lavendar is used in purification baths and rituals,
in healing incenses and sachets. It is said that carrying this herb
enables the carrier see ghosts. The essential oil heightens sexual
desire in men and carrying lavendar brings strength and courage.
Habitat
Lavendar likes light sandy soil and full sun. It grows to 18 inches and
should be mulched in colder climates for winter protection for this
perennial.
Lemon Balm
Scientific name: Melissa officinalis
Medicinal value
This is used to treat children with fever, flu and colds and treat
adults with cold, headache, depression, menstrual cramps, insomnia,
nervous stomach, hyperthyroidism (Grave's disease), herpes simplex and
indigestion.
Religious importance
It is believed that Lemon Balm is used in spells to bring success and
in healing spells. It is often used in spells to find love and
friendship.
Habitat
Lemon Balm is a perennial with a height of 3 feet and needs full sun,
rich soil with regular watering.
Licorice
Scientific name: Glycyrrhiza glabra
Medicinal value
This herb is a major source of female hormone, estrogen. It is used to
treat cough and chest ailments and also used as a remedy for stomach and
heart problems, indigestion and most respiratory ailments. Should not be
used by pregnant women.
Religious importance
It is believed that Licorice root was buried in tombs and caskets to
help the soul pass easily into the Summerland and that chewing on a
piece of the root makes one passionate.
Habitat
This perennial plant reaches 3 to 7 feet tall and grows best in warm
sunny climates.
Lovage
Scientific name: Levisticum officinale
Medicinal value
This herb eases bloating and flatulence and is used with other herbs to
counteract colds and flu.
Religious importance
It is believed that Lovage is added to baths to clean the psychic
portion of the mind and when added to bath with rose petals will make
you attracted to the opposite sex.
Habitat
Lovage is a perennial that grows 3 - 7 feet tall and is adaptable to
many conditions and does best in full sun.
