Chhardi (vomiting)

Introduction
It is the combination of two words namely, Chhad meaning to cover /
enclose / fill and Ard means Pain / discomfort thus giving the whole
term he meaning of discomfort due to vomiting. During vomiting, the
vomitus covers / fills the mouth completely & causes immense
discomfort to the body.

Poorvaroopa
- Utklesha- means nausea.
- Kapha praseko- excessive salivation.

Roopa (clinical features)
- Vataja Chhardi
- Pain in cardiac region, head & navel
- Dryness of mouth
- Cough
- Hoarseness of voice
- Priking pain
- Loud sound of eructation while vomiting
- Vomitus is frothy, broken up, black color, thin &
astringent, little in quantity. Vomiting is with great
difficulty but with severe impulse & great distress.

vomiting is accompanied by horripilation.

- Vomitus is salty, sour, blue, viscous, hot & red.
- Dwisthaarthaja
- The person when stressed psychologically by factors, which
inflict the psyche such as smell, vision, or eating, disgusting,
antagonistic, unclean, putrefied objects vomits.
Treatment
- Langhana (fasting) is indicated in the beginning itself, except
in vomit caused by vata.
- For those who are strong, have great increase of doshas and who
continue to vomit large quantities repeatedly a vamana (emesis) is
to be administered.
- In vireka (purgation) wine, fruit juices or milk (as adjuvant to
the purgative drug) should be used
- For those, who are dry and debilitated, samana ausadhas (drugs
which mitigate the doshas) only should be administered.
- Ghee mixed with saindhava, made warm and drunk cures vomiting
caused by vata especially, also cough and palpitation; or that
(ghee) mixed with more of trikatu and trilavan or that prepared with
the
- For vomiting arising from pitta, in order to produce purgation
(powder of trivrit mixed with juice of drksha and iksu or tailvaka
sarpi should be administered.
Decoction
- Decoction of dadima with sunthi, dadhi (curds) and dhanya.
- Milk mixed with equal quantity of water or juice of sour fruits
mixed with more of saindhava and ghee or foods which are mixed with
fat and prepared from sunthi, dadhi (curds) and dadima, warm and
added with salt or also lubricant purgatives are ideal.
- Decoction of tender leaves of jambu and amra, mixed with honey
consumed warm or cold cures vomiting, fever, diarrhea, fainting and
thirst.
- Licking (the powder of) manashila, krishna and maricha in the
juice of bijapuraka or kapittha and mixed with honey cures vomiting.
Kapittha along with vyosha, or duralabha with honey should be eaten;
(powder of) maricha, coca, ela, honey should be licked.
- Appropriate, comforting methods relieve Vomiting caused by
dislikes. By the bouts of vomiting, resulting in depletion of dhatus
(tissues) matarisva (vata) undergoes increase inevitably.Hence,
therapies such as sthambhana (with holding the expulsion of fluids
from the body) and bramhana (nourishing) mentioned in excess bouts
of emesis therapy is recommended in this condition.
- In case of psychic stress, favorite talk, consolation,
exhilaration, common stories, friends and amorous movements are
useful. Favorite odors such as of earth, flower, fermented beverage,
sour fruits etc., vegetables, edibles, syrups, well-processed
shadava, raga and leha (types of pickles), vegetable and meat-soups,
kambalika, khada, meat, parched grains, various chewable, fruits,
roots endowed with smell, color and taste control the vomiting.
Whatever smell, taste, touch, sound and vision is liked by the
patient, though unsuitable, should be provided. This helps to
control the disease easily.
